State of Recruiting
Collegiate Lacrosse
recruiting has become as intense as recruiting for
mainstream sports such as football, basketball and baseball.
College coaches typically get into their offices around
8:30am to find their voice mails, email inboxes and mail
slots filled with information about the next Mikey Powell.
As most coaches will admit they are inundated with
information about players so they have had to elevate their
processes with regards to reviewing prospects and narrowing
down that list to a manageable list.
College coaches are looking for student
athletes that can handle themselves on and off the field.
The last thing a college coach wants to worry about is a
player that they have invested money and or time into not
making it academically or being kicked out due to one of the
many social issues haunting our young athletes today (drugs,
alcohol). Coaches want good athletes who are coachable
and don’t have egos bigger than their abilities.
The recruiting process for coaches can be
broken down into four distinct areas:
|
Identification |
Where the coach identifies
players that he or she is interested in |
|
Evaluation |
The period that the coach
assesses the talent level of the players on their
short list |
|
Recruiting |
Once the coach has identified
the recruits he or she contacts them and schedules
visits etc. |
|
Signing |
Wrapping up the deal, getting
the recruit committed with or without scholarship |
